Last year, A. restaurant in Chip Bee Garden commissioned me to make a large figurative drawing commemorating the longevity of friendship amongst three men who have been business partners for more than 2 decades. Their directive was simple, "that it has taken a village to arrive".
I thereby made a drawing of 3 clusters of 3 men: in the activities of eating, drinking and planning in a pastoral of a village.
Afterwards, having made so many studies of men sitting on the ground that I decided to make another large drawing of seven men in a single grouping, designating them as not eating, not drinking, and not quite in any form of meeting. This set me to want to start a series of men gathering, as gathering of more than 3 persons in public is illegal in Singapore without prior license from the authority….such that it would seen familiar and yet odd for the Singapore viewer….when the gathering has no actual purpose, like a secret meeting , spatially relating with each other like a coded conspiracy.
